This writer says if you put a book through the "movie machine", it ends up as a trivialised version of the book, as the screenwriter hasn't made choices. Basically he's saying it can't be the author's story, it has to be the screenwriter's story.

I was also interested in how the actors change so many of their lines, one shortening them, one adding to them.

A movie certainly is a collaborative creative effort.
